The drive from Essaouira to Imlil is one of Morocco's most spectacular contrasts: from the windswept Atlantic medina to the soaring peaks of the High Atlas in a single 3-hour journey. The route heads east through Marrakech, then south via the village of Asni up the winding mountain road to Imlil at 1,740 m altitude.
Imlil is the base camp for Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa and one of the world's most accessible 4,000-metre summits. The village is a hub for trekkers, with mule hire, mountain guides and guesthouses clustered around a central square surrounded by walnut trees and terraced fields.

Imlil is the gateway to some of Morocco's best mountain trekking.
Jebel Toubkal Ascent
The standard ascent to the 4,167 m summit takes two days from Imlil, spending a night at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 m. No technical climbing required, but a guide is strongly recommended. Best from May to October.
Berber Village Walks
The valleys around Imlil are scattered with traditional Berber villages connected by mule tracks. Day hikes to Aroumd, Achayn and Around offer spectacular valley views and authentic village encounters.
Kasbah du Toubkal
