Gateway to Jebel Toubkal – North Africa's Highest Peak
Imlil is a small Berber village in the High Atlas Mountains, sitting at 1,740 metres above sea level. It is the primary trailhead for ascents of Jebel Toubkal — at 4,167 m, the highest peak in North Africa and one of the most accessible high-altitude trekking summits in the world. Every year, thousands of trekkers, climbers and mountaineers pass through Imlil on their way to Toubkal Base Camp (Neltner Refuge), typically a 3-4 hour hike above the village.
The drive from Marrakech to Imlil is itself a highlight — the road winds south through the Haouz plain, passes the traditional market town of Asni, then climbs steeply through dramatic gorges and Berber villages with pink mudbrick kasbahs, terraced walnut orchards and apple trees. The landscape becomes increasingly spectacular with every kilometre.
Beyond Toubkal trekking, Imlil is a base for exploring the High Atlas: day hikes to the village of Aremd (1,850 m), visits to the Kasbah du Toubkal (a restored caïd's castle turned guesthouse above the village), mule rides along mountain trails, and cultural visits to traditional Berber guesthouses where life has changed little in centuries.
CAB Morocco drivers have years of experience on the Atlas mountain roads, including in winter when snow can dust the higher passes. Large trekking backpacks, crampons, ice axes, trekking poles and sleeping bags are no problem — just mention your gear when booking.

BookGetting to Imlil for Toubkal – What to Know
The standard Toubkal circuit takes 2 days — Day 1: Imlil to Neltner Refuge (Base Camp at 3,207 m), Day 2: summit push at 4,167 m and descent back to Imlil. Many trekkers take a third day to descend comfortably. The route is non-technical from June to October; crampons and ice axes are needed from November to May.
Most trekkers arrive in Marrakech by plane, transfer directly to Imlil, spend 2-3 days on the mountain, and return to Marrakech for their flight home. Our Marrakech Airport to Imlil transfer (from €55) is the most convenient way to start this circuit.
For multi-day treks, we arrange return pickups at a pre-agreed time — no stress about getting back to Marrakech after a long day on the mountain.
