Morocco's Royal Capital

Rabat is Morocco's political capital and one of its four Imperial Cities. Located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, it is a city of wide boulevards, manicured gardens and some of the country's most important monuments. Unlike Marrakech or Fes, Rabat moves at a calmer, more European pace.

Key landmarks include the Hassan Tower — an unfinished minaret from the 12th century — the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Kasbah des Oudayas overlooking the Atlantic, and the ancient Roman ruins at Chellah. Rabat is also home to the Royal Palace, though the grounds are closed to visitors.

A private taxi is the most efficient way to travel between Rabat and other Moroccan cities. The journey to Casablanca is a quick 1h 15, while Marrakech and Essaouira are reachable in a half-day drive along Morocco's well-maintained highway network.

Top Attractions in Rabat

Rabat rewards visitors with a relaxed Imperial City experience without the crowds of Marrakech.

Hassan Tower & Mausoleum

The incomplete Hassan Tower, commissioned in 1195, stands alongside the gleaming Mausoleum of Mohammed V — together they form Rabat's most iconic monument and a moving tribute to Morocco's royal history.

Kasbah des Oudayas

This 12th-century fortified kasbah sits at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river. Its blue-and-white lanes, Andalusian garden and clifftop café overlooking the Atlantic make it one of Morocco's most photogenic spots.

Chellah Necropolis

A walled Roman and medieval Islamic site on the edge of Rabat, where storks nest atop ancient minarets and cats wander among flowering ruins. An unusually peaceful place that rarely appears in the tourist brochures.
