Essaouira — known historically as Mogador — is one of Morocco's most enchanting cities: a UNESCO World Heritage medina perched on a rocky Atlantic headland, its whitewashed walls and blue shutters swept by an almost constant ocean breeze that earned it the nickname "Wind City of Africa." The city draws a unique mix of travellers — artists drawn by the light, windsurfers and kitesurfers chasing the wind, history enthusiasts exploring 18th-century Portuguese ramparts, and foodies seeking the finest fresh Atlantic seafood.
The city's Medina is smaller and less overwhelming than Marrakech's, making it easy to explore on foot. The port — a working blue-boat fishing harbour — is one of the most photographed scenes in Morocco. The ramparts (Skala de la Ville) offer stunning panoramic views over the wild Atlantic, and the city's famous Gnawa musicians perform at the annual Gnaoua World Music Festival each June.
South of the city, the surf and kite beach at Sidi Kaouki (25 km) is one of Morocco's top windsurfing destinations. North of Essaouira, the road to Casablanca passes through sweeping argan-tree landscapes and Atlantic fishing villages. Essaouira makes a perfect day trip from Marrakech (2h30) or Agadir (2h) — or a relaxed overnight base in its own right.

Essaouira is best reached by private taxi from Marrakech or Agadir — there is no train, and the bus (CTM/Supratours) is slow and requires a change. The private taxi journey from Marrakech takes 2h30 on the N8 coastal road, passing through argan oil cooperatives and dramatic Atlantic scenery.
The Gnawa World Music Festival (usually June) brings tens of thousands of visitors to Essaouira — book your taxi well in advance during this period. The Atlantic Andalucías Music Festival and the Argan Festival also draw visitors in spring.
The wind in Essaouira blows almost constantly from the north — this is great for kitesurfers and windsurfers, but take a jacket even in summer. The calmest months for beach relaxation are May-June and September-October.
